Salford City FC or known as then as Salford Central was founded in 1940 at a church and were part of the local Eccles and District Leagues which was for local boys to play football. Salford Central first tasted success in 1955/56 and 1959/60 when they won two division two titles. In the midst of those seasons, they also won a division three title in 1958/59.

1963 saw a huge change for the club as they swapped their name from Salford Central to Salford Amateurs, due to the club playing at an amateur level. The name change came with a new nickname which the club has still to this day, The Ammies. The same year Salford went up to the Manchester League Division one, which they won in 1968/69 to gain promotion to the Premier Division.

The Ammies won their first Lancashire County Football Association Amateur Cup in 1971 as they beat Aintree Villa 4-0, in the following four seasons Salford won it twice and came close to winning a fourth LFA Amateur Cup in 1977 but unfortunately, they lost in the semi-finals to Blackpool Rangers.

However, they bounced back from that negative and went onto lift the Manchester Premier Cup in 1978 and 1979. In the 1978 season the club got rid of the amateur part of their name and just became Salford, as well as moving to their stadium that they have now which is Moor Lane (known as Peninsula Stadium for advertising reasons).

At the turn of the 1980’s the club merged with Anson Villa and then Salford became apart of the Cheshire County League, following that season the Cheshire County League and the Lancashire Combination League both came together and created the North West Counties Football League.

The club went through another name change in 1989 to Salford City, the next year they entered into the FA Cup for the very first time.

In 2001/02 season Salford did not get promoted even with the accumulation of 97 points due to goal difference.

Salford City landed a huge signing in 2006 when ex Manchester United youth player Ben Thornley signed, in hope to increase attendances which it unfortunately did not. Staying in the 2006 season Salford won the NWCFL League Challenge Cup final when they defeated the holders at the time Cammell Laird 3-2, which was the first time in 24 years that they won silverware.

Ex player and local businessman Darren Quick was appointed the new chairman at the club.  The club was promoted into the eighth tier of English football in the 2007/08 season. However, the Ammies had a turbulent first season as they secured status in the league on the last day of the season, as they beat Garforth Town 5-2, Salford’s season was summed up by fans as the great escape.

The next two seasons in the Northern Premier League Division 1 North was frantic, with Salford having one win in 26 games. But also had some critical wins against Rossendale United winning 3-1 under the helm of Neil Hall. The next 3 seasons the Ammies finished mid table and lifted the Manchester Premier Cup against Mossley in a 4-2 win.
