Turning Professional
In 2017 Salford City turned professional, another huge turning point in the clubs history as running a professional club means that you have more funding to invest in better players and better facilities. The joint management of Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morely both committed to Salford full-time when they signed professional contracts first. Shortly afterwards the players followed and signed their professional contracts.
Former Class of 92 player Chris Casper also became Salford’s sporting director. There were rumours that the owners had aims of a 10-year plan to get to the Championship at this stage in their history. Unfortunately, the club did not get promoted as they lost to Halifax Town on penalties in the National League North play-off semi-final.
In the 2018 transfer window when striker Adam Rooney left Aberdeen, a Scottish Premiership team, so this was quite a big leap for such an inform player in the UK at the time. The Irishmen was sold for an undisclosed fee, many people thought at the time that the fee was quite substantial, he was also reportedly earning £4,000 a week at the Ammies. That season proved the year where Salford City would get promoted to League Two via the National League play-off final 3-0 win over AFC Fylde.
